My sixth graders are really taking off with their blogging and commenting. For these two weeks we’re holding our Blog-a-thon and just yesterday we acquired a Real Audience (unsolicited by me).
A teacher in South Korea wrote to say she wanted to use our posts as models for her 6th graders learning English in Korea–cool! She found use by Googling–6th grade blogs.
Our second Real Audience came in the form of a business owner here locally. Ian, owner of Expedition Island, read a student’s post about her experience at his climbing facility. As thanks, he offered her a walk-in pass next time she visits.
It reminds me a bit of Stink and the Incredible, Super-Galactic Jawbreaker by Megan McDonald. Stink learns letter writing at school. So he begins to write complaints to companies and in return, he receives free stuff in the mail. The letter writing works for a real purpose!
So, should I expect more product placement in my 6th grade blogs? Certainly not. But the idea that real people (teacher and business owners) might Google a few key words and find our blog is the ultimate lesson.
I can’t wait to get to school and show them!
